🌿 Cheera Papaya Thoran (Red Spinach & Raw Papaya Stir-Fry with Coconut Mixture)
A delicious Kerala-style stir-fry made with raw papaya and red spinach (cheera).
📝 Ingredients:
- Papaya (raw), chopped – 1 cup
- Cheera (red spinach), chopped – 1 bunch (about 2 cups)
- Onion, chopped – 1 small
- Garlic, chopped – 2–3 cloves
- Mustard seeds – ½ tsp
- Dry red chili – 1
- Curry leaves – 1 sprig
- Coconut oil – 3 tbsp
- Salt – to taste
- Grated coconut – ½ cup
- Green chili, chopped – 1
- Jeera (cumin seeds) – ½ tsp
- Turmeric powder – 1 tsp
1️⃣ Prepare the coconut mixture:
- In a bowl, mix grated coconut, green chili, jeera, and turmeric powder. Keep aside.
2️⃣ Temper & sauté aromatics:
- Heat 3 tbsp coconut oil in a pan.
- Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
- Add dry red chili, curry leaves, chopped onion, and garlic. Sauté until onions turn soft and golden.
3️⃣ Add papaya & cook:
- Add chopped raw papaya to the pan with a pinch of salt.
- Stir well and cook for 5–7 minutes on medium heat until the papaya softens. If needed, sprinkle a little water.
4️⃣ Add cheera & coconut mixture:
- Add chopped cheera to the pan and mix well. Let it cook for 2–3 minutes until wilted.
- Add the prepared coconut mixture and stir well.
- Cook on low heat for another 2 minutes, allowing the flavors to blend.
5️⃣ Final mix & serve:
- Adjust salt if needed.
- Serve hot with rice and sambar or moru curry.
