Cheera Papaya Thoran (Red Spinach & Raw Papaya Stir-Fry with Coconut Mixture)



🌿 Cheera Papaya Thoran (Red Spinach & Raw Papaya Stir-Fry with Coconut Mixture)

A delicious Kerala-style stir-fry made with raw papaya and red spinach (cheera).


📝 Ingredients:



  • Papaya (raw), chopped – 1 cup
  • Cheera (red spinach), chopped – 1 bunch (about 2 cups)
  • Onion, chopped – 1 small
  • Garlic, chopped – 2–3 cloves
  • Mustard seeds – ½ tsp
  • Dry red chili – 1
  • Curry leaves – 1 sprig
  • Coconut oil – 3 tbsp
  • Salt – to taste
🥥 For the coconut mixture:


  • Grated coconut – ½ cup
  • Green chili, chopped – 1
  • Jeera (cumin seeds) – ½ tsp
  • Turmeric powder – 1 tsp
🔥 Instructions:

1️⃣ Prepare the coconut mixture:


  • In a bowl, mix grated coconut, green chili, jeera, and turmeric powder. Keep aside.

2️⃣ Temper & sauté aromatics:


  • Heat 3 tbsp coconut oil in a pan.
  • Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
  • Add dry red chili, curry leaves, chopped onion, and garlic. Sauté until onions turn soft and golden.

3️⃣ Add papaya & cook:


  • Add chopped raw papaya to the pan with a pinch of salt.
  • Stir well and cook for 5–7 minutes on medium heat until the papaya softens. If needed, sprinkle a little water.

4️⃣ Add cheera & coconut mixture:


  • Add chopped cheera to the pan and mix well. Let it cook for 2–3 minutes until wilted.
  • Add the prepared coconut mixture and stir well.
  • Cook on low heat for another 2 minutes, allowing the flavors to blend.

5️⃣ Final mix & serve:


  • Adjust salt if needed.
  • Serve hot with rice and sambar or moru curry.
