Vazhakoombu/Banana Flower Thoran
Vazhakoombu Thoran is a delicious and nutritious South Indian dish made with banana flower, also known as vazhakoombu or vazhaipoo. It is a popular side dish that is usually served with rice and other traditional curries. Here's a simple recipe to prepare Vazhakoombu Thoran:
Ingredients
- 1 medium-sized banana flower (vazhakoombu or vazhaipoo)
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil
- 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
- Chopped small onion 2-3
- 2-3 dry red chilies, broken into pieces
- A few curry leaves
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
- 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
- Garlic 2-3
- Green Chilli 2-3
- 1/2 cup grated coconut
- Salt
- Cooked greengram (cherupayar)1/4 cup
Method
- Preparing the Banana FlowerRemove the outer layers (bracts) of the banana flower until you reach the tender portion.
- Separate and discard the hard stick-like stigma and the transparent petal from each floret.
- Finely chop the cleaned florets and immerse them in a bowl of water mixed with a little turmeric powder or buttermilk to prevent discoloration.
Prepare Coconut Mixture
In a small bowl, combine the grated coconut, turmeric powder, crushed cumin, green chili, and garlic. Lightly mash the mixture with your hands to release the flavors.
Cooking the Banana Flower
- Heat coconut oil in a pan. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
- Add chopped small onions, dry red chilies, and curry leaves. Sauté until the onions turn soft.
- Add coconut mixture and mix well
Add the Banana Flower and Green Gram
- Drain the chopped banana flower and add it to the pan. Stir well.
- Sprinkle salt and cook the banana flower on low-medium heat for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Add the cooked green gram and mix well.
- Stir everything together and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
Finish and Serve
Turn off the heat and serve your Vazhakoombu Thoran hot with steamed rice and other side dishes.
