Mutton Stew Recipe



Kerala mutton stew is a popular Indian dish from the state of Kerala in South India. It is a fragrant and flavorful stew made with tender chunks of mutton or lamb, potatoes, onions, and carrots cooked in a creamy coconut milk broth with aromatic spices.

Ingredients
  • Mutton Pieces 500gm
  • Big Onion 2medium sized
  • Carrot 2 small
  • Curry Leaves
  • Green Chilli 3-4
  • Pepper Powder 2-3 tsp
  • Garam Masala1/2 tsp
  • Spices(Cardamom 4,Cloves 4,Cinnamon stick, Whole Pepper 5)
  • Coconut Oil 3tbsp
  • Thick coconut  milk 1/4 glass
  • Thin Coconut Milk 3/4 cup
  • Salt
  • Crushed Ginger and Garlic 2tsp
Method

  • Add the mutton pieces into a cooker.
  • Add a little black pepper powder,1/4 cup of water and salt to taste. 
  • Stir well and cook for until 5-6 whistle.
  • Heat 3tbsp of coconut oil in a pan.
  • Add spices and let them splutter
  • Add sliced onion,greenchilli,and curry leaves.
  • Add a little salt and saute until onion becomes soft
  • Add in crushed ginger and garlic and saute for a few more minutes.
  • Add in diced potato and carrot and saute them.
  • Add the cooked mutton pieces.
  • Mix well
  • Add thin coconut milk  and mix well.
  • Cover and cook for five minute on medium heat.
  • After five minutes open the lid and remove some of the potato pieces from the gravy.
  • Grind the potato pieces with a little coconut milk and make into creamy texture.
  • Add the ground  potato into the gravy.
  • Add more salt and pepper if needed.
  • Add thick coconut milk and mix well.
  •  Do not allow the stew to boil after adding thick coconut milk.
  • Switch off the flame
  • Garnish with some curry leaves.
  • Serve with roti,paratha,Idiyappam,Appam etc
