Kootu Curry is one of the main dishes of Kerala Sadya .Its a thick dish made with raw banana,Yam,Black Chick peas and Coconut paste enriched with Pepper,Jaggery(optional) and a flavorful tempering.In this recipe i did not use Jaggery ,if you like sweetness you can add Jaggery. In each places ,vegetables may vary for making this Kootu Curry.In some places people use ashgourd or pumpkin for koottu curry.But most commonly used vegetables are raw banana and yam along with Black chickpeas.
- RawBanana Pieces(square shape pieces) 1 cup
- Yam Pieces (square shape pieces)1 cup
- Cooked Black Chickpeas 1cup
- Turmeric Powder 1/2 tsp
- Chilli Powder 1 tsp
- Pepper powder 3/4 tsp
- Salt
- Water as required.
- Curry Leaves
- Jaggery 1tsp(optional)
- Ghee 1 tsp
- Grated coconut
- Cumin Seeds 1/2 tsp
- Green chilli (2)
- Water 3tbsp
- Dry chilli 2
- Small Onion Chopped 2
- Coconut oil 2tsp
- Curry Leaves
- Crushed pepper 1tsp
- Grated coconut 1/4 cup
Method
- Wash and soak Black chickpeas overnight or atleast for 8 hrs.
- Peel and cube raw banana and yam.Wash many times and put them in water for about 10minutes.(Before peeling off the skin of those vegetables grease your hands,it helps to prevent stain of banana sticking to your hands and to prevent itching while cutting yam)
- Drain water from chickpeas and transfer these into a pressure cooker. Add enough water for cooking chick peas and cook until 7-8 whistle.(You can add a little salt before closing the lid here i did not add salt for cooking chickpeas)
- After cooking the chickpeas keep these aside.
- Add cubed banana and yam into a heavy bottomed pan. Add turmeric powder 1/2 tsp,chilli powder 1tsp,Pepper powder 3/4 tsp, salt and 1cup of water. Allow the vegetables to cook till they become soft .
- While the veggies are getting cooked take the grated coconut,cumin seeds ,green chillies and a little water into a mixer jar.
- Grind everything into a smooth paste.
- When the veggies are cooked well ,add cooked chickpeas to it and mix well.
- Add coconut paste into it and stir well.
- Cover and cook for another 3-4minutes on low flame.
- After cooking coconut paste add a little ghee/coconut oil into the curry and switch off the flame.
- Finally add the tempering to the Koottu Curry.
- Enjoy this delicious Kootu Curry with hot steaming rice!!!
